Leadership
Overview
In my current and previous professional roles, I've led development of strategic research and design projects and statewide campaigns, provided content-centered critiques, workshops, and skill development opportunities, and supervised and mentored design staff and student assistants.
I would describe my leadership style as conscientious, democratic, and servant-based. I care deeply about the wellbeing of others and believe that putting others first not only demonstrates trust and understanding, but also elevates relationships and leads to more motivated and productive teams. I’ve been proud of my progress to identify and utilize my strengths as a quiet leader. Being my authentic self means being responsible, organized, and thoughtful.
When faced with decisions that affect my team at work, I often ask for input and ideas for solutions. My philosophy is to gain as much information as possible and weigh available options before making a decision. Although this takes time, I believe this method is worth the extra work to empathize with others and listen to their perspectives.
Feedback
The positive results of my conscientious leadership style can be seen through the comments and recommendations from others.
One direct report said, "I really appreciate Valyn as my supervisor. She truly understands communication and marketing and I feel very supported by a supervisor who understands the work I do."
A previous student employee said, "Overall, a major factor in why I enjoyed [my] job was probably the leadership. Valyn was an amazing boss. I grew as a designer and professional employee because she challenged me and gave me constructive feedback and yet was always very encouraging, affirming, and full of helpful advice."
Another professional colleague commented, "Thank you for bringing creative energy and expertise to the office! I feel like I am less alone since you joined the team!"
In addition to supervising, I've been recognized for my thoughtful contributions on the many teams and committees I've been involved with. Some of these include:
